Why Volunteer?

A Journey of Pawsitive Impact

By Tania Mendoza, Veterinary Assistant from Taxco, Mexico

As an animal lover, I've always been drawn to helping animals in need. Volunteering with Vets Beyond the Wall in the quaint and charming beach town of Sisal has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

I've had the opportunity to participate in community cat spay/neuter clinics (my personal passion is helping with Trap-Neuter-Release), contributing to the welfare of these animals and their communities. Beyond the hands-on experience of trapping, helping with pre-operative and recovery after surgery, I've also gained valuable people skills, since I’ve had the chance to connect with people from diverse nationalities and backgrounds.

If you're passionate about animals and looking for a meaningful volunteer experience, consider joining Vets Beyond the Wall! It is a fantastic way to make a difference, learn new skills, and immerse yourself in a unique cultural exchange.

Gaining Traction for Vet School

By Claudia Ruvalcaba, Biology Student from Zacatecas, Mexico

Volunteering with Vets Beyond Walls has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my path toward veterinary school. As a Biology student with a dream to become a veterinarian, I’ve always known how important hands-on experience is, but working with Vets Beyond Walls took this understanding to a new level. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the chance to learn not only from seasoned veterinarians but also from other passionate volunteers, including my brother, Ivan, who joins us every summer during the busiest times for spay and neuter campaigns.

Through this experience, I’ve developed essential skills that make me feel more prepared and confident for vet school applications. Whether it’s learning the fundamentals of preventive medicine and spay/neuter procedures, or assisting with post-operative care, each day brings new learning opportunities. I’m especially grateful for the chance to work in a supportive community of professionals and volunteers who are as dedicated to animal welfare as I am.

I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned with Vets Beyond Walls in my future studies and career, knowing that this experience has strengthened my commitment to animal care and helped me take meaningful steps toward my goals.
